Lyrics

Verse 1

I told you I would come back

I told you in the middle

And here I am

At the seam

Between what was built

And what their children did with it

The first part of the record

Was about a few people

A father, a mother, four sons

A boy who fled a throne room

A few who met by a forest spring

And lit the lamp my people called the church

Verse 2

But the part you are about to hear

Is about what comes after

The ones who built the lamp

Are gone now in this part of the record

And the ones holding it

Are their sons

Their daughters

The ones who grew up in the light

And had to choose what to do with it

Some of them carried it

Some of them tried to put it out

Some of them spent the early part of their lives

Trying to break the thing their fathers had built

Before the breaking broke them open

Pre-Refrain

There will be wars in this part

There will be a man who demanded proof and got it

There will be women and children in a fire

There will be a captain with a torn coat

There will be a thousand sons of mothers

Standing in a line they should not have survived

And there will be conversions

There will be conversions you will not believe

Refrain

These are the children

These are the children of the faithful

Some of them carried the lamp

Some of them tried to put it out

And the ones who tried the hardest

Are the ones I cried for the longest

Verse 3

I have loved them

I want you to know that

I have loved every one of them

Even the ones who chose wrong

Even the ones I had to write about

Knowing what they did

The hardest part of keeping a record

Is not the people who were good

It is the people who could have been

And the people who almost were not

And the people who finally were

After they were almost lost

Final Refrain

These are the children

These are the children of the faithful

Some of them carried the lamp

Some of them tried to put it out

(Listeners: ahh, ahh)

And the ones who tried the hardest

Are the ones I cried for the longest

Outro

Now then

Let me show you a son

Of a man you have already met

Walking into a city

He came to destroy
