Lyrics

Verse 1

He was coming down

He was coming down

The sky had parted and the air had stilled

The thousands of us standing at the temple field

He landed soft as if his feet had touched a thousand floors

And the air around him hummed like nothing had before

Verse 2

We fell to the earth as one

The way grain falls when the wind has come

And he stood among us, clothed in white

A man and not a man, lit from inside the light

Pre-Touch

He said come forward, one by one

Come and feel the marks the nails had done

Come and feel the wound the spear had carved

And every one of us did, every soul that gathered there

The Touching

And when it was my turn

I reached out with my hand

And I touched the place the nail had been

And the skin was warm

And the wound was real

And the man was real

And I had never been so sure of anything

Verse 3

He let me feel his side

Where the spear had gone through

And I wept and could not stop

And he did not hurry me through

Then he stood back and looked across the crowd

Thousands of us, every one allowed

And he began to speak our names

He called twelve men forward

Twelve out of thousands

And one of them was mine

He had never seen my face

He had never walked my street

But he said my name like he had been saying it

Since before I had been made

Bridge

He knew our names

He knew our names

He knew our names

Out of thousands

He knew each of us

The Children

And then he asked for the children

Bring me your little ones, he said

And every father stood, every mother led

The smallest of us, the youngest, the ones we'd carried

Through the storms and the darkness, the ones we'd buried

Some of, the ones who had not

He knelt down on the temple floor

He took each child by the hand

He blessed them one by one

By every name their mothers gave

And when he was done

He wept

The Lord himself wept over our children

Outro

And we wept too

We wept the way the rain had wept

On every dry year of our line

He had known us

He had named us

He had blessed our children

By name

He knew our names

He knew our names

He knew our names
